日本の遺産Japan Heritage

The stories behind the pieces

Many of our lots carry centuries of Japanese craft and symbolism. Tap a treasure to learn what it is — and what to look for.

Tansu

Japanese chest & cabinet

Tansu are the traditional storage furniture of Japan. Merchant and household tansu flourished in the Edo period (1603–1868) — staircase chests, kitchen cabinets (mizuya-dansu) and wheeled chests (kuruma-dansu) were built to be carried out in an emergency.

Collector’s tip · Look for sliding doors, hand-forged iron fittings and grain-rich wood such as keyaki (zelkova).
